It was not a nice place for children. It certainly was misery but it also depends on what kind of child you were. Some were Japanese orphans, forced to live with non-Japanese families. In any case there was a lack of schooling, dysentery, and general sickness in the camp. There were three children's barracks for Japanese children with no parents. They had a very regimented existence of school, eat, sleep, and relative isolation from the rest of the camp.
