In Chapter 18, Woody comes to realize that all the stories his father had told them are true. His family in Japan owned large amounts of land, he had relatives who were generals and judges, and women in their family had been educated. This knowledge gives Woody a sense of relief that his father had not lied to his family, and that his father actually has a respectable family in Japan who love and miss him.
