Farewell to Manzanar

Jeanne writes that eating in the mess hall led to the collapse of her family as an integrated unit. Why do you think that the disruption in mealtime togetherness was so significant to her family

The disruption in mealtime togetherness was significant because it was one of the few times the family members had to bond and connect with each other. The mess hall was a place where they could share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings.... it was a place where they could forget about everything that was happening to them and just be together.... to be a family. When they stopped eating together, their sense of connection and family bonds were lost.
