The family is in an internment camp. Terminal Island is essentially owned by a company where the people work for little money. Their homes are ramshackle shacks made out of old boards and other wood. People were forced to work whenever the boats came in. Jeanne did go to school, some other the kids were even white, but Terminal Island could often be a scary place full of scary people.
