I believ e that they joined the arky becaise it was their civic duty and they did what they felt was the right thing to do.

Richie: He wanted to go to college, but his mother couldn't afford it. He joined the army as and escape plan so he could send money to Kenny and so his mom could afford a lot more.
Peewee: He joined so he could have the same things that everyone else did
Lobel:he joined the army to please his father by proving that he is not a homosexual, and now his father hates him for becoming a soldier in what he regards as an unjust war.
