Why would two people who seem to be so different from each other try to take their own lives?

This is referring to the old woman and Mildred.

Mildred was bored, depressed, frightened of bombs, and a user of drugs like so many others in the novel. Her overdose on page 13 was not the first.

As for the old woman, she preferred lighting the match and burning with her books than living in a world without them.
