Fahrenheit 451

Why are the characters on the television screen called "The Family"? What purpose are they supposed to serve in this society?

This question popped up in my Socratic Seminar questions document and I didn't understand the question. Could I get some help on this? Thanks!

The family is very like what we call reality television. Their purpose is distraction..... everyone is more worried about their television family than they are about what goes on in their own homes. In this case, Mildred's life revolves around the walls of her home. The walls are interactive and allow people to play small roles in the developing drama. Real emotions are frowned upon, thus, simulated emotions are embraced. This allows everyone a sense of happiness and belonging. Everyone has a family..... but those families exist within a controlled atmosphere.
