There are only a few characters who completely conformed to society. There is Mildred, Montag's wife. Despite living with a born again rebel to conformity, she clings to her meaningless life and beliefs like a life preserver. Mildred's friends, although painfully depressed and empty also cling to their superficial beliefs of right and wrong and happiness. The other characters are more complex. Captain Beatty is a paradox of sorts. He relishes in the destruction of books but knows way too much about their contents to "hate" them so much.Granger has found peace with his rebellion without getting killed. Clarise is a young self-realized rebel and Montag, of course becomes a raging counter-culture extremist.
