Fahrenheit 451

What is the purpose of an individual in Fahrenheit 451?

What are the people in the society in Fahrenheit 451 supposed to do besides be happy?

I think that Montag's fateful meeting with Clarisse puts this question forward. After his talk with the young free spirited Clarisse, Montag no longer knows if he is happy or exactly who he is. People are immersed in a society of superficiality and consumption. Montag hungered for deeper meaning, in part, to find himself again.
