Montag's mood shifts and changes from one moment to the next. For the most part he's confused, but that confusion has also caused him to be pensive and depressed. He wants to understand what's in the books, but he can't read. Montag is aware that the questions he needs answered are held within the pages of books and realizes that he needs someone else to help him.
