When Beatty says that Montag wanted to fly near the sun, he was alluding to the Greek story of Icurus. Icurus made some sort of wings and flew away from his horrible master. However, he disregarded advice to not fly too close to the sun and as a result, the sun melted the wax that held his wings together. Beatty is saying that Montag disregarded his advice and after repeated warnings, he still read books. Now, since Montag went too far, the firemen have to burn down his house and arrest him.

This is an allusion to the story of Icarus
