1) Books are banned all of the time. In fact, Fahrenheit 451 was banned in a high-school in Mississippi.
2) The parlour walls are very like today's reality television. People have become obsessed with people they don't know.... they pay less attention to their own family members than they do the lives portrayed on the screen.
3) Another example would be the "pills" Millie uses regularly..... no questions asked. Today, there is a prevalence of "feel good" pills that dull the users to everyday life.
