Montag compares reading to what action he performed as a child? What does this mean about his own ability to read?

Montag compare reading to filling a sieve with sand. The music that constantly distracts him keeps him from memorizing the Book of Ecclesiastes in the same way the holes stopped him from collecting the sand as a child.
