Mildred is depressed and suicidal. She has trouble handling reality. Montag's enlightened attitude towards books and life shatters the thin grip she has on her sanity. Mildred sees the world in  extremely narrow and superficial terms. She cannot handle the ideas and emotions that Montag is presenting to her. She destroys her house, and marriage, in an attempt to purge her distressing life.
