This is complex. Both Faber and Beatty are passionate about books. Beatty is more of a paradox because he also believes in the state. He tries to justify what he does for a living but his dilemma only tears him apart. Faber has no affinity for the state. He only seeks to preserve the wisdom and sanctity of books.
