As narrator, Mama changes her tone frequently throughout the course of the text. Mama's tone is self-confidant and proud until the arrival of her visiting daughter, after which she becomes defensive, even sarcastic, when dealing with Dee. Mama is defending her home, culture, and the daughter who remains at home with her. She is unappreciative of her of her older daughter's condescending attitude, and her lack of understanding in the way Mama regards her possessions.
