I have not read this article but I'm pretty sure I know what the question is after. Dee wants the various objects, like the butter churn, and the quilts as something stylish to outfit her flat with. These, things, however hold powerful practical and cultural weight for Mama. They are sacred to her own identity, an identity she wants to pass on to Maggie. They are sacred objects that defy being objectified by Dee so she can make her flat look cool.
