Mama, the narrator of the story, is big boned, stronger than most men, and mild tempered. There is a quiet sincerity about Mama that earns her the reader’s respect early in her narrative. She is loving, forgiving, independent and frank. There are times when we might question Mama's reliability as a character (is Maggie destined to the live the life Mama has?) but we are satisfied that mama is authentic. What she says is what she feels. In the end Mama's point of view is sincere and her ultimate rebuke of Dee has been a long time coming.

What impact does the author’s use of point of view have on the reader’s understanding of and reaction to each character? Be sure to complete a response for Mama, Maggie, and Dee.
