Even though Dee wants the dasher and other objects she identifies as being significant to her heritage, she doesn't know their history or their importance to the family. When Hakim-a-barber asks "Uncle Buddy whittle that, too?" and Dee is unable to answer, it is Maggie who must tell the family of the meaning behind the object
