Mama is honest about herself. At first she seems almost disparaging about herself but her practical sense honesty shines through,

"In real life I am a large, big.boned woman with rough, man.working hands. In the winter I wear flannel nightgowns to bed and overalls dur.ing the day. I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man. My fat keeps me hot in zero weather. "

Mama has no illusions about where she lives or who she is. Mama instead has a sensible view of herself, a kind of practical pride. She is a product of her past and present, she is the way she is.
