Was Mattie silver smart?

In the book Ethan Frome it is stated she didn't have an education or job skills. That's book smart but what were some examples from the story that showed Mattie silver was a smart girl?

Being smart in any sense is subjective. I know you are looking for an answer but it really is up to you. I don't think she was cunning or had intentions to usurp Ethan's wife. She loved Ethan and really didn't know what to do about it. She doesn't have any elaborate plan to achieve a life with Ethan.
