Why does Esperanza's mother say, "Now we are peasants, too."

Esperanza comes from a wealthy and entitled background. When they lose their house and land to Tio Louis, a poor peasant lady asks them what happened. Esperanza feels uneasy telling a peasant their affairs but Mama reminds her they are no longer wealthy: "now we are peasants, too."
