Why do esperanza and her mother come to the united states

After the murder of Papa, Papa's evil stepbrother forces mother to sell the house and land. Esperanza's mother refuses so he burns down the house. Esperanza's mother refuses to mary the evill stepbrother so they must flee to the United States to begin a new life. They sneak through rows of grapes to get to Señor Rodríguez's land.
