What does it mean to "belong"?

In classs we are learing about Esperanza Rising and the one thing I got confused at was the part where she says she wants to belong somewhere.... I never fuly understood what she meant by that.

I think she meant that she wanted an identity apart from her heritage and the socio-economic values thrust upon her. She wanted to belong to her own identity: a place of her own creation.
