Esperanza Rising

On page 49-50, Abuelita tells Esperanza about leaving Spain with her family. How does the symbolism of the phoenix relate to Abuelita’s story? Why might Abuelita be telling this to Esperanza?

Leaving your home and starting over is a new beginning: a rebirth emerging from an old life. This is just like the phoenix rising from the ashes. I think that Abuelita wants Esperanza to feel better about losing everything she once had and starting over in America.
