"It gives us the grapes, and then they welcome us."

Esperanza's father is sharing his love of the land, and the love it shows them in return.... the provisions it affords them.

"This whole valley breathes and lives," he said, sweeping his arm toward the distant mountains that guarded them. "It gives us the grapes and then they welcome us."
