In Chapter Five, we learn that different nationalities live in separate camps. Communication between camps is frowned upon because organized opposition is a worry. Esperanza and her mother are provided with a meager cabin. Esperanza notes that it is smaller than the servants quarters at el Rancho de las Rosas. Hortensia, Isabel, and Alfonse also share their space.
