While Papa is a wealthy land owner, he is sympathetic to the poor. He treats his employees with respect sometimes even giving them land of their own. Tio marco and Tio luis are the opposite. Esperanza says that they look like "like two underfed billy goats." They covet other people's land and love power and money over anything else. Note what Miguel says to Esperanza about them,

"Your father was a good man. He gave us a small piece of land and a cabin. But your uncles... you know their reputation. They would take it all away and treat us like animals. We will not work for them."
