Esperanza responds to challenges differently at the end of the story than she did in the beginning because she now has other peasants around her and teaching her how to do these chores and responsibilities. In more of the beginning of the story she was rich and had servants to do everything for her, but not Esperanza will take matters into her own hands.

In the beginning, she was wealthy. But when her house caught on fire, she was forced to move to the U.S and lost control of the servents. She started not understanding and didn't quite adopt the life as a peasant. She also thought peasants were dirty but didn't realize that she was one too! Since Mama got really sick, she had to do something which was to bring Abuelita back and pay the bills for Mama. Since Hortensia and Josefina were doing it for food, she needed to do something for Mama. That's when she becomes responsible and knows what real life was like as a peasant. Which people was dirty for doing work for one purpose.
