Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising

How do you think Esperanza Rising expresses the spirit of the Pura Belpré Medal? Get specific by quoting and citing at least TWO parts of the book in your post. Do NOT simply say something generic like "it's a great book" or (worse!) "the author is Latina." Instead, consider what it is about the way the story is told, the elements of the story, and how this book fits into young adult literature that has earned it this specific award.

Esperanza Rising is a coming-of-age story that also examines core themes relevant to the American immigrant experience. The author makes Esperanza a sympathetic dynamic character that changes from a scared entitled girl into a strong and resilient young lady. Strong female characters, especially of colour, are not common in American fiction. Many young people, especially, girls can find strength and warmth in this narrative.
