After her mother goes to the hospital, Esperanza spends a huge amount of time working to help with the bills. I don't know if this brings her joy, but it certainly keeps her busy. She also spends time visiting her mother, and even buys her mother a pinata.... something she ends up giving to the children in the camp. She felt joy at doing something to make the children happy.
