I'm not sure what part of the book you are referring to.

Oh I see. There is a military hierarchy involved with the boys that mimic the adult military world. Leaders must not be emotionally invested in their followers. There must always be the objective mission of completion. Every boy should be considered expendable by the leader in order to complete the mission.
