In the book, why have people abandoned the practice of celebrating birthdays?

Birthdays are a civilian luxury. In battle school, all energy is put into the collective effort of destroying the Buggers. Individual milestones that have nothing to do with war are irrelevant. These kids have given their identities to the military.
