El Buscón (The Swindler) Imagery

The imagery of the river

The genesis of the narrator’s naming when he was born is described using sight imagery. The narrator says, “Well, first of all Your Honour should know that my name is Lázaro de Tormes, son of Tormè, Gonzáles and Antona Pèrez, who lived in Terajeres, a village near Slamanca. I was actually born in the RiverTormes, and that is why I took that surname, and this is how it all mattered.”

The bridge

Hearing imagery is depicted when the blind man asks Lázaro to put his ear close to the bull and hear what it says. Lázaro says, “I went back to my master who impatiently waited for me. We left Salamanca and came to the bridge. As get to it, there is some animal there which looks like a bull. The blind man told me to go to it, and then he said: Lázaro, put your ear close to the bull, and you'll hear a loud noise inside it."

Imagery of life

Lázaro is taken by a blind man who is his master for the years to come. The master is strict and cautious because e he intends to strengthen Lázaro to become a strong man who is focused and determined. The master is determined to show Lázaro how to make a living and create his riches when the right time comes. Lázaro reflects on his life and realizes that the blind man is right. Lázaro says, “That was true because, after God, he gave me life, and though he was blind, he revealed things to me and made me see what life was about.”
