“Better frightened than lied to.”

Jacob Black, Chapter 3

This quote illustrates the differing attitudes that the two beaus in Bella’s life take. Unlike the overprotective zeal of Edward, who is almost parental in his need to protect his precious object of his love, Jacob is much more a peer, who acknowledges her right to make decisions about her well-being.

“Would you like to hear my story, Bella? It doesn’t have a happy ending – but which of ours does? If we had happy endings, we’d all be under gravestones now.”

Rosalie Cullen, Chapter 7

This quote illustrates the Cullens’ attitude towards their immortality. Instead of thinking it as a boon, a chance to live forever, enjoy unfettered power, they all prefer and greatly value human life. Being a vampire is a not a punishment per se, but it is also not something they chose. A natural life and a natural death is what they hoped for.

“It was my unspoken assumption that he was only there for Alice. I had the sense that he would he was only there for Alice. I had the sense that he would follow Alice anywhere, but that this lifestyle was not his first choice.”

Bella Swan as narrator, Chapter 12

This quote not only analyses Jasper’s reasons for being a “vegetarian” vampire, or for that matter being a Cullen, it also simultaneously reflects Bella’s reason for wanting to become a vampire. Like Jasper, she too will follow her love Edward anywhere. If Edward was to decide to start killing again, she may not be that troubled, as can be inferred from her acceptance of Edward’s cheat years which she believes was acceptable, or her lack of qualms in letting Edward feed on humans. Edward is her utmost priority.
