Why does Dr.Seward think Renfield may be influenced by the sun or moon?

Dr. Seward notices that Renfield suffers regular bouts of strange behavior. At noon, when the sun is the highest, Renfield becomes violent and howls like a wolf. Later, as the sun goes down, Renfield tries to catch it, after which, he seems to calm down and take on a more normal demeanor.
