Why are societies repeatedly drawn in by vampire stories?

I think the undead and the horror of it all is still of great interest. There is also much that can be explored via vampire stories. Forbidden love, power, God, Devil....

There is a part in most people's hearts that tends to hope for immortality; vampire novels fill this desire. Society today also has a special penchant for the anti-hero. Throw both of these factors in with a great horror story and you have the reason why people are repeatedly drawn in by these stories.
