Hyde is a despicable character and one who would be horrible "things." In his normal state, Jekyll is not at all like Hyde and so Hyde represents the evil, black state of one's personality. He worries that Hyde may truly hurt someone.

Dr. Jekyll had no control over what Hyde did. His transformations were more frequent and he knew that Hyde was indulging in dark longings.
