Poole is taking Utterson across the garden to see Dr. Jekyll or perhaps Mr. Hyde. All the staff are pretty scared because it would seem some eerie transformation has occurred. As they cross the garden, Poole tells Utterson,
"Now, sir," said he, "you come as gently as you can. I want you to hear, and I don't want you to be heard. And see here, sir, if by any chance he was to ask you in, don't go."
Hyde's grizzled voice can be heard saying that he did not want to be disturbed.
