Initially Dr. Jekyll seems an innocent character who might be being blackmailed by someone seemingly evil in the character of Mr. Hyde.  He has attracted a friend such as Utterson and some personal acquaintances such as Dr. Lanyon who, while a professional colleague, somewhat questions the research trail Jekyll is presently following.
