Jekyll is experimenting into things that are not "rational" by any measure. When Lanyon sees the real change in Jekyll and realizes what he has done, Lanyon cannot support the research. Lanyon is a practical man and wants to work in the truly scientific world. He is, in many ways, the complete opposite of Jekyll and his world view.
