Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Does Dr. Jekyll ever admit that he created Mr. Hyde to keep up his reputation?

Dr. Jekyll creates Mr. Hyde to be the dark side of himself. Jekyll needs to keep up his reputation while still being able to blow off steam. Does Stevenson ever actually say that Jekyll created Hyde to keep up his reputation?

Jekyll wanted to indulge in his dark side unencumbered by his good side. That was his main reason for the transformation. In his letter to Utterson (ch 10) Jekyll does say he wanted to indulge in his dark side while keeping up appearances.
