Lanyon becomes sickly and withdrawn after learning the truth about Jekyll and Hyde. He tells Utterson that he has suffered a shock from which he "shall never recover." One week later, Lanyon is dead.

Jekyll's behavior becomes increasingly strange. He isolates himself and hasn't been seen for weeks. When Utterson happens to see him, Jekyll looks sickly. When he advises him to get oute more and get some fresh air, Jekyll says he cannot, after which, he suffers a kind of seizure before quickly closing the window.
