Jekyll was losing more and more of himself every time he turned into Hyde. Eventually Hyde was able to take over Jekyll's form without the potion. Jekyll's experiment with his dark side was too successful. Jekyll eventually lost himself to the monster that he had only wanted to experience for a short time.
