The advantages of belonging to one faction or another would be that the faction you're assigned is is a decision made by personal choice, which allows you to base your decision on which faction best suits your talents and personality. A disadvantage would be that once you're assigned a faction your stuck, but in my opinion, the ultimate disadvantage would be separation from parents.
