Chapter 15, why would attachment to your family be considered shameful?

This question is at the beginning of chapter 15... I just don't understand it

Once you have been put into a faction, any emotional attachment you have for your family would be unacceptable.  Your entire loyalty sticks with the faction from the moment you move into that faction.
