Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a novel written by Jeff Kinney in 2007. The book revolves around a child named Greg Heffley who is about to start Middle School. Greg is mocked by his older brother Rodrick Heffley, who picks on him and is also told off by his father, Frank Heffley as Greg likes to play video games instead of playing sports outside. The novel explores Greg's first year in Middle School and how he befriends Rowley Jefferson, who Greg considers as immature. Greg and Rowley become close friends until Greg gets Rowley into trouble with the school's principal after scaring away young children whilst wearing Rowley's jacket. The two mend their friendship at the end of the book and Greg looks forward to a summer filled with video games.
The book was written by Kinney after it was well received as an online hit and then went on to be published as a paper version. The author wrote the book to explore the troubles of a child starting middle school. Kinney's creation has been well received by critics and fans and won the Blue Peter Book Award in 2012. The book has also been turned into a major feature film in 2010, directed by Thor Freudenthal, and written by Jackie and Jeff Filgo, along with Gabe Sachs, Jeff Judah, and Jeff Kinney. The film features Zachary Gordon as Greg Heffley and Robert Capron as Rowley Jefferson.
