What makes L'abri and Valmondé gothic?

Do you mean Madame Valmonde or Monsieur Valmonde?

As mentioned in the story, L'abri is the plantation of Armand in other words the place where he lives in. And, Valmondé is the place where the Valmondé's family live in. So my question is : what makes these two places gothic?
