Read the first half of Act I (up to page 41 in the Penguin edition), to the point after Young Linda and Young Bernard exit, but before Happy returns and finds Willy standing in the kitchen.

Daily Lesson Objectives

• Introduction to reading dramatic literature: learning how to imagine a play's performance and to appreciate the script as the means to an end, not the end product itself. Remember that an act is meant to form a unit and that reading half an act (especially when there are no separations of scenes) might create an artificial break that could alter one's appreciation of the text.
• Introduction to reading well: learning how to become acquainted with a new work of literature by examining characters, tone, and setting; finding early themes; appreciating the achievement of good writing.
