The praise-singer is Elesin’s constant companion. He sings Elesin’s praises, repects him, admires him, and serves as his caregiver. When Elesin does not fulfill his duty, however, the praise singer turns against him. This is significant because at the very start of the play, the praise-singer talks about the integral importance of fulfilling one's duty regardless of the situation or the way in which that duty should be carried out. In the end, Elesin's sense of failure to fulfill his duty leads to the taking of his own life.
